For years I've envied the work of Don Bluth. Many of his movies like "An American Tail", "A Land Before Time" and "The Secret of NIMH" had a huge influence on my wanting to be an artist.

This sketch, done with a Prismacolor colored pencil, was drawn using a tutorial video from www.donbluthanimation.com.

The Beast

My son Quinn handed me a Crayola Twistable, a fresh sheet of copy paper and asked me to draw "Beauty and [inaudible] beach" for him.

The conversation that followed went like this:

Me: "Beauty, beach, what?"
Quinn: "Yes! Draw that."
Me: "Okay. [sketching out a beach scene with sand, water..]
Quinn: "No! Not a beach. BEAC...Beast!"
Me: "Beauty and the BEAST?"
Quinn: "Yay! [jumping up and down] Beast, Beauty and the Beast."

After this exchange, I searched Google Images and found a reference photo that worked. Since my son has the patience of a ladybug, I quickly sketched this out in about 2 minutes and he loved it.
